Electrolyte Recipe

Who likes to drink?! When I say drink I of course mean Hydration.
So I wanted to share with you my favourite electrolyte drink recipe, and the beauty of it: it’s homemade.
Electrolytes are minerals that have an electric charge and are found in blood, tissues, organs, and other bodily fluids. Sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, phosphate, and magnesium are all electrolytes. Electrolytes do a lot of important things in your body. They help keep the amount of water in your body balanced, as well as maintain pH levels and help move nutrients in and out of cells. Electrolytes also help muscles, nerves, and organs work properly.
Now if you eat a healthy diet and drink adequate water—so that your urine is clear to pale yellow—you don't need to drink electrolyte drinks on a regular basis because your electrolyte levels should be balanced.
The amount of water you take in should be about the same as the amount you lose through sweat, urine, and other fluids. If you lose more fluid than you take in and get dehydrated, you lose electrolytes. Symptoms of dehydration include dark colored urine, extreme thirst, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, headaches and infrequent urination. Though it's rare, you can also drink too much water and dilute the amount of sodium in your body, leading to hyponatremia.
There are times when you may become dehydrated and electrolyte drinks can help you rehydrate and replenish your electrolytes, including:
- Being in extreme heat (summer, saunas…)
- Working out (weight lifting, cardio, yoga…)
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Drinking too much alcohol (hangover solution )
So NO, no need to drink it on a daily basis.
- But in a workout day, highly recommend it. Best time to drink it? An hour to 30 minutes before your workout. Not right before or during it’s much more efficient if you anticipate so your body is ready on time.
- Having a headache?! Make yourself a drink before a Tylenol give yourself 30 minutes and see. (You need to give time for the magic to happen ).
- Drank too much at a party?! Don’t go to bed without a cup of your magic juice or first thing in the morning make you a drink and start your day on a good note.
My recipe: (for 2 servings)
Can be preserved in the fridge for up to 3 days. I actually do my orange juice and lemon juice for the week and mix it all only right before drinking it.
- 1/4 cup orange juice (homemade or not from concentrate or any added sugar)
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1 TBSP raw honey
- 1/4 tsp pink salt or sea salt
- 1 1/2 cups of coconut water
Hope this helps and if you want to give it a try let me know how if you felt the benefits and how you liked it.
If you have a juicer make sure to use it, if you don’t have one maybe that’s something you can add on your Christmas list.
